'The Patrick Evans Foundation' article in The Surrey Mirror, Thursday 20th May25/05/2010
Catherine wrote an article for the Surrey Mirror to promote the new Foundation and also make everyone aware of the local people involved and events taking place in our name. Unfortunately they didn't include everything that we wanted mentioned when they published it, but we are hoping it will still raise awareness. Below you can read the original article.
In February 2009 we lost our much loved son and brother Patrick. Patrick died following a skiing accident while on a family holiday with us in France. Patrick’s death and a tribute written by us for Patrick featured in the ‘Surrey Mirror’ at the time. Patrick was an ex pupil at St. Bede’s School and at the V11 Form College, he worked for two years at Specsavers in Redhill, was an active member of Donyngs gym and later of the YMCA and was well known and loved in the local area.
In the year following Patrick’s death we managed to find a little comfort in the fact that friends and family members raised over £20 000 for two charities that were close to Patrick’s heart. This inspired us to set up a charity in Patrick’s memory which is intended to raise money for causes which we believe Patrick would have wanted to support. We launched ‘The Patrick Evans Foundation’ in February 2010 to coincide with the first anniversary of Patrick’s death. At the launch party we all paid an entrance fee which entitled us to a bowl of chilli and a Chinese lantern and we raised over £1200. ‘The Patrick Evans Foundation’ aims to help those suffering from illness or disease, to support those dealing with bereavement or loss, to create healthy sporting opportunities for young people and to promote awareness of safety in sporting activities.
For 2010 we have lots of exciting things happening to raise funds for ‘The Patrick Evans Foundation’. On August 7th,which would have been Patrick’s 23rd birthday, some of Patrick’s friends are taking part in the London Triathlon at The Excel Centre. James Lamden, Joe Wainwright, Will Dott, Mike Trim, Mike Chubb and Chris Madden are all doing a 750m swim, a 20km cycle and a 5km run and we are delighted that they have decided to compete in aid of the newly launched ‘Patrick Evans Foundation’. Five of the six friends are ex pupils from St. Bede’s School in Redhill.
On August 29th we will be holding Party4Patrick, which aims to be a family fun day, a local event for friends and family of Patrick and their friends, to gather together to have fun, listen to music and raise money for ‘The Patrick Evans Foundation’. This follows the success of Party4Patrick 2009 which raised over £8000.
On September 4th an intrepid group of cyclists are planning to cycle from Reigate to Nice. Starting with a local cycle ride, intended for families and friends to get involved, some of the group will continue, with at least 13 cyclists heading to Paris and a hardcore of 5 or 6 continuing on to Nice.
A group of family and friends will be taking part in the London half marathon ‘Run to the Beat’ around Greenwich on Sunday 26th September 2010.
A group of ex St. Bede’s pupils intend to repeat the success they had last year by carol singing next Christmas in aid of ‘The Patrick Evans Foundation’.
There are also plans for some of Patrick’s University friends to compete in the New York Marathon, and we are hoping for success in the ballot for places in the London Marathon 2011!
We believe that it is a testament to Patrick and to his personality that he has become the inspiration for raising so much money for good causes. We would like to thank everyone who has contributed in any way towards the successful launch of ‘The Patrick Evans Foundation’, which has enabled us to see something positive emerge from our personal tragedy and which continues to allow Patrick to make a difference to other people’s lives.
